Private Tour: RHODES WEST COAST

OVERVIEW

Start your day with a drive up the spectacular Mt. Filerimos, once home to the oldest ancient city-state called Ialysos. Be welcomed by many peacocks naturally residing in the area. You can enjoy a short walk along a cobbled path leading to an imposing cross offering a stunning panoramic view. You can also opt for a visit to the Byzantine Monastery and get the unique 7 Herbs Liquor made after the monks’ secret recipe before you return to the bus.

*Mt. Filerimos can be replaced with the Butterfly Valley.

Continue following a scenic West coast route that connects some of the most impressive sights – the ancient city of Kamiros and Kritinia’s castle. Kamiros is one of the best-preserved Classical Greek cities. Wander through its streets imagining what life in Rhodes must have been like in this ancient Doric settlement dating from the late bronze age until approx. 142 BC.

Then explore Kritinia’s Castle, founded by the Knights during the 14th century, and be amazed by the superb views overlooking the west coast. The fortress is often called “Castello” as it was the largest of the Knights’ fortresses along the island’s west coast. It dominates the western passage and the channel of Halki.

Finally, depending on the season or your preference, you can choose to relax at a seaside tavern. There is an opportunity to have a refreshing swim and delicious seafood. Or you can drive to the nearby mountain village to taste local produce and have village food.

ITINERARY

• Drive to Mt. Filerimos, free time for your Individual browsing – approx. 1 hour
  

– Enjoy a walk along the Golgotha Path to the imposing Cross with a Panoramic view

– Have your free time to soak up the view, have fun watching peacocks, explore the medieval Monastery, or have a soft drink/ coffee and taste the famous 7 Herbs liquor

• Scenic drive along the West Coast – approx 40 min

– Drive along the West Coast, passing by the Airport, Paradisi, Soroni, Fanes, and Kalavarda

– On the way, get introduced to Rhodes Island

• Free time in Ancient Kamiros – approx 1 hour 15 min

– Discover one of the best-preserved Classical Greek cities

– Have free time to admire the remains of a 3rd-century BC Doric temple, public baths, an altar to the Greek god Helios, the 6th-century BC Temple of Athena Polias, and a 206m (675ft) covered central walkway.

• Stop at Kritinia’s Fortress – 40 min

– Have a chance to explore a 14th-century AD fort erected by the Knights of St. John

-Walk all 96 steps to get into the fortress for the best views of the west towards various islets

-Or relax at the castle’s cafe enjoying afresh orange juice or an ice cream

• Drive to a seaside tavern or a mountain village for leisure time – approx 1-1.5 hours of free time
  

– During the hot summer months, a great choice for leisure time is a seaside tavern with a beach and delicious seafood

– Opt for a mountain village Embona if you are interested in tasting local produce and having village food

• A relaxing return drive to your accommodation – approx. 1 hour

PICK-UP

The pick-up is scheduled for 09:30 am. Pick-up a little sooner or later is also possible, so please let us know if you prefer to start the tour at a different time.

TOUR DELIVERY

The tour is delivered by a tour driver, who provides general and practical information inside the tour vehicle. Maps with directions & historical information are provided for individual browsing.

Entrance ticket to Ancient Kamiros – 6 EUR p.p. Children under 18 years – free. European Union (EU) Students & Seniors – 50% discount.

Kritinia Fortress is a Free site.

In Filerimos, the Golgotha path, the cross, and the viewpoint are free, but there is an entrance ticket to the Filerimos Monastery – 6 EUR p.p. Visit to the Monastery is optional.

A light lunch/ snacks/ refreshments  – typically, sandwiches/ pitta wraps are approx. 3-5 EUR, 5-15 EUR salads, meal 20-35 EUR.

Public WC – 0.5 EUR.

An extra charge of 20-50 EUR (depending on the location) is applied if the pick-up is from resorts other than Ialyssos, Ixia, Rhodes Town, and Kallithea.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY – 1/ 3

Walking over periods of more than 10 minutes includes uneven surfaces, unpaved trails, and cobblestone surfaces. Travelers must be able to step in and out of the tour vehicle (our coaches are equipped with a power step).

Kritinia Castle has approx 60 steps to reach the top, it is an optional visit.

Other sites during the tour are easily accessible.

CLOTHING

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sensible walking shoes. In spring (April-May) and autumn (Mid-September-November), a light jacket is recommended as it can be windy. During summer (June-September), do not forget your hat, light wrapping, and sunglasses. Make sure to carry with you a bottle of water at all times! Always wear your sunscreen!

TOUR VEHICLE

The tour vehicle is our brand new Mercedes Benz Limo Minibus with 11 seats. The Minibus has spacious soft leather seats, A/C, a step stool for easy boarding, USB plugs, Mini-fridge, and an onboard entertainment system.

For small groups of up to 3 persons, the tour is delivered by a Toyota Proace Minivan. It is equipped with A/C and spacious seats.
